And now for a long overdue announcement:

Several of you already know, I'm sure, about Steamcon, a steampunk convention right here in Seattle this October, with special guests Tim Powers and Paul Guinan.

You might not know that I'm on the committee for it -- specifically, I'm handling the website and publications.

Our registration system is finally finished, so the website went live today. There will be more to it in the next few months, but I'm quite happy with our launch version.

So with no further ado, for your entertainment and edification, ladies and gentlemen, may I present:

http://www.steam-con.com/

Please tune your aetheric receivers accordingly.

You can go ahead and purchase your membership at the introductory price; even more important, go ahead and book your room for it -- I have a feeling the room block will sell out early for this con.

jQuery.

I've seen several of my web-dev friends pondering what technical skill they should learn next, and friends, I've come down from the mountains to tell you:

Learn jQuery.
"jQuery is a fast and concise JavaScript Library that simplifies HTML document traversing, event handling, animating, and Ajax interactions for rapid web development. jQuery is designed to change the way that you write JavaScript."
They're not even kidding. I've been able to slap together some pretty impressive drag-and-drop functionality for the next version of CourtTrax's core product -- I saw people's mouths literally hanging open at the presentation I gave to the company this afternoon -- and it was all so damn *easy* I almost feel *embarassed* for taking credit for it.

So, yeah. Go learn jQuery, seriously. ([livejournal.com profile] leenerella, I'm especially looking at you here.)

I should probably mention .... I finally did quit my job a couple of weeks ago. Things just weren't working out.

Since I'm actively looking for a new job, and since my portfolio site was starting to feel hopelessly outdated to me, I've spent the past few days completely redoing the entire thing. This involved much swearing. But I think I'm finally happy with it all.

Have a look and let me know what you think:

There was a website I remember, from a couple of years back, that aggregated weblog posts, parsed through them for links to Amazon, and created a list of books that bloggers were talking about. I think it was developed by someone in Seattle, even.

I need to find this, but the only search terms I'm coming up with are way too vague. Does anyone know the site I'm talking about?

MetaFilter.

Matt Haughey of MetaFilter, the 800-pound gorilla of collaborative weblogs, had a redesign contest a little while back. First prize was a custom-painted iPod. I almost didn't enter -- I figured competition would be pretty fierce, and didn't think I really stood a chance, but I decided that even if I didn't win, I at least would have a nice portfolio piece to show for it.

Results were announced a couple of days ago, and, well, I didn't win, but my design was one of Matt's favorites, which is nice.

You can see my redesign, and what Matt had to say about it, at Metafilter: Reloaded, a portfolio page on webmutant -- which I also just finished redesigning, by the way. Like it?

Now that I've stared at a monitor all day, I'm off to the Mercury for Mardi Gras. Don't wait up.
