I should probably mention .... I finally did quit my job a couple of weeks ago. Things just weren't working out.

Since I'm actively looking for a new job, and since my portfolio site was starting to feel hopelessly outdated to me, I've spent the past few days completely redoing the entire thing. This involved much swearing. But I think I'm finally happy with it all.

Have a look and let me know what you think:

Tiger / Firefox / 1680x1050. Looks beautiful to me.

...and I didn't know you designed the SeaGoth logo!

Back at the lab PC, and it looks very shiny.

*does "good-luck job-hunting" dance*

And it looks good on my Mac running Firefox and Leopard as well. I really do love your design aesthetic.

Particularly the Torchwoodesque logo on the front page.

Nice.

You could also add the logo you did for crazedcamel.

I like the animation, really clean.

On Firefox on MacOSX
[Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.8.1.14) Gecko/20080404 Firefox/2.0.0.14], your icons don't match your descriptions. Looks like the indexing is off by 1: each description has the image for the following item (Blue Utopia --> Design Works; Design Works --> Hermitage).

Looks cool, though!

Looks gorgeous. Flawless, even. :)

I like the cute trick you're using to do the animated tabs. I'd be inclined to change the logo, though. It's the first thing anyone's going to read, and the combination of headache text and jpeg artifacts/pixelation is a rather tiring on the eyes.

The picture zoom and fades are very well done, by the way. Even Microsoft loves that kind of stuff these days.

You had a point about the logo. I mean, *I* liked it, but, yeah.

But today I spotted a font I thought would look really cute and still have the right aesthetic I was going for, so I changed it. Have a look (http://webmutant.com/) and let me know if you like it better. Thanks!

It's just really lovely, Michael. I'm impressed, and I like that you've used Flash in a way that doesn't require a huge wait, and doesn't pull me out of the regular one-browser/one-tab web experience. (Other people who use Flash enjoy popups and full-screen mode, and that bothers me when I'm browsing.)

I hope that WP contacted you in a timely and polite way about their decision. If not, please let me know so I can kick someone. I do know they'd like to keep your resume on hand in case something more suitable comes up!

PS: I checked it out in IE7 and FF2 on WinXP. Looked good all around.

It's not Flash, believe it or not -- that's all done with AJAX libraries. I'm a little amazed myself that it was even possible.

I did hear back from them reasonably quickly, yeah, and I had *such* a mixed reaction to it -- I mean, I was disappointed I didn't get the job, but thrilled to hear it sounds like they *really want* to hire me as soon as they could find a more suitable position, so -- yeah. We'll see what happens.

Why? I never have. :) I'm just really good at taking code other people have released and making it do what I want .... Doesn't mean I *understand* it, but this Frankenstein approach has served me pretty well over the last few years ....

I can usually get along with faking it like that, but if I want to move out of webdev 1, I need to get that under my belt. At least some of it...

But I just found an interesting book that takes multiple approaches and doesn't assume I already understand OOP*: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/9780596527747/
Hopefully it will help!

*I do understand a little - I work with PHP, but only to a certain level of complexity, and then I get all cross-eyed.
