The only thing better is when you have that heavy fog in the high alpine country of the Cascades, and the sound becomes... non-existent. You can hear your breathing, and your heart beat, and not much else. Birds flitting by come out of seeming nowhere, their wings beating *so* loudly that they sound like they're on the attack path, and then disappearing just as suddenly.

Cliffs, up *or* down, appear in the space of a step, and directioning becomes interesting. No sun, no stars, no visibility past about 10'. Following streambeds and ridge lines becomes essential.
